The
furore surrounding the tax evasion case in the tiny European country
of Liechtenstein has certainly made waves in 2008 and reports emanating
in September reveal that almost a 1000 more people have been linked
to tax evasion pertaining to Liechtenstein banks.
The revelation that Germany and a number of European nations were worried that the country of Liechtenstein was facilitating tax evasion has been very big news in the last few months and, according to a report in the Herald Tribune, a further 996 customers of Liechtenstein banks will be investigated on suspicion of engaging in tax evasion. The investigations into the alleged tax evasion will be led by German authorities as they were the first to raise their concerns about Liechtenstein possibly harbouring those engaged in large levels of tax evasion. These new revelations in relation to Liechtenstein's tax evasion scandal relate to over 2000 bank statements of a man who tried to blackmail a Liechtenstein bank about their involvement in facilitating the tax evasion of their customers. Tax evasion now seems to be a crime that the European Union will simply no longer tolerate and many countries are going all out to bring those engage in tax evasion to justice as, after all, large scale tax evasion is more than capable of having a global impact.
Tax
Evasion - Large Sums of Money
According to the report in the Herald Tribune, the 996 potential new cases of tax evasion involves huge sums of money and those prosecuting the case estimate that almost $2 billion may be the potential figure of this tax evasion case. This is obviously a huge amount of money and it just goes to show the extent of tax evasion today and the financial clout of the customers who are alleged to be involved in the case. It is clearly apparent that those being investigated in this new tax evasion case to emerge from Liechtenstein are, for the most part, extremely wealthy and this is something that seems to be a noticeable trend when it comes to tax evasion.
Tax
Evasion - Winning the Battle
According to the report in the Herald Tribune, Germany hope to set a precedence with the cases in Liechtenstein in the hope that they will show that tax evasion in the tiny principality simply won't be tolerated any longer. The emergence of the 996 new suspected tax evasion cases shows that there may well still be a long way to go before those European countries battling against tax evasion can hope to eradicate the problem entirely..
