Tax
evasion is something that the government in the UK have seemingly
be working hard to eradicate but, according to a report in the Guardian,
Whitehall seem to be preventing international plans to make tax
evasion a thing of the past.
According to the report in the Guardian, the battle to stop widespread
tax evasion on a worldwide scale are being scuppered by the government
and Whitehall in the UK and this has been met with considerable
consternation by many experts involved in the field of tax evasion
who can't quite fathom why the battle to eradicate tax evasion is
being derailed by proposals emanating from Whitehall. Tax evasion
is, of course, a very serious crime and this is something that is
reflected in the punishments being administered to those who have
been found guilty of tax evasion in the last few years. You need
look no further than the Samsung CEO, Lee Kun Hee, or the Hollywood
actor Wesley Snipes when looking to find evidence of the seriousness
of tax evasion as a crime and the severity with which it is dealt
with. As such, it makes the fact that Whitehall seem intent on blocking
proposals set out to deal with tax evasion all the more difficult
to fathom.
Tax
Evasion - A Curious Decision
The
issue of tax evasion is one that is never far from the lips of policy
makers given the impact that tax evasion can have on a global scale
which makes it all the more surprising that stories of Whitehall's
endeavours to block tax evasion proposals are emerging. According
to the report in the Guardian, the British government have been
accused of trying to torpedo plans that had been put in place to
try and stem the prevalence of tax evasion in today's society. The
claim that Whitehall is jeopardising proposals to tackle tax evasion
comes from the fact that they are trying to remove a paragraph from
a document that was drawn up to deal with tax evasion on an international
scale. According to the report in the Guardian, the part that the
government are lobbying to remove is one of the most crucial aspects
of the treaty and centres on helping less developed countries wean
themselves off aid. Tax evasion experts believe that by removing
this aspect of the document, they are positively encouraging tax
evasion still.
Tax
Evasion - Lessons Not Learnt
According
to the report in the Guardian, the paragraph that Whitehall is trying
so hard to remove is the most linked with the battle against tax
evasion. It basically encourages global tax information sharing
and simplified tax laws which would be imperative in helping to
reduce the prevalence of tax evasion both in the UK and throughout
the world. Speaking to the Guardian, tax evasion expert John Christensen,
states, "The European Parliament last week made a strong statement
demanding the commission support this document. Britain is out on
a limb within Europe. It's the usual suspects of the US, UK, Australia
and Canada. These are the countries that created the toxic financial
crisis undermining the global economy. Seemingly lessons have not
been learnt."
